Leather is sold on adjectives. Rich. Luxurious. Premium. None of those words mean anything, and none of them are on the label by accident.

\n\n

There are really only a few things that decide whether a piece looks better in two years than it did in the box. They are not hard to understand, and once you know them you can tell him exactly what he is holding.

\n\n

The grades, plainly

\n\n

A hide has a top surface — the side the hair grew from. It is the densest, toughest part, and everything below it is softer and weaker. What a tannery does with that surface is what the grade describes.

\n\n

Full-grain keeps the surface intact. Nothing is sanded off, so the fibres stay dense and the natural marks stay visible: healed scars, insect bites, the odd wrinkle. It is the strongest leather you can buy, and it is the only grade that develops a real patina. The marks are the point. A hide with no marks either did not have any, which is rare and expensive, or had them removed.

\n\n

Top-grain is the same hide with the top layer sanded away to remove those marks, then usually finished with a coating to even out the colour. It is more uniform, more stain-resistant, and easier to sell, because every piece looks like the sample. It is also weaker, and the coating is what wears through rather than ages. When top-grain goes, it goes patchy.

\n\n

Genuine leather is the one worth knowing about, because it sounds like the highest grade and is close to the lowest. It is real leather in the sense that it came off an animal. It is usually a lower split of the hide with an artificial surface applied. It will not develop a patina, because there is no grain left to develop one.

\n\n

Tanning is the other half

\n\n

Grade tells you which part of the hide. Tanning tells you what was done to it.

\n\n

Vegetable tanning uses tannins from bark and leaves. It takes weeks rather than hours, which is why it costs more. It produces a firm leather that starts pale and darkens with light and handling — the amber-to-mahogany shift people mean when they talk about leather ageing well. It also takes a burnished edge properly.

\n\n

Chrome tanning uses chromium salts and takes a day. It produces a softer, more flexible, more water-tolerant leather in any colour you like. It is not a lesser process — most good jackets and bags are chrome-tanned, and for a garment you want the softness. But chrome-tanned leather largely stays the colour it was dyed. It wears; it does not patina.

\n\n

Neither is better in the abstract. They are for different things. A veg-tanned wallet will look like his after a year. A chrome-tanned holdall will still look like it did, which for a bag that lives in a car boot may be exactly what he wants.

\n\n

What patina actually is

\n\n

Patina is not dirt, and it is not damage. It is oils — from his hands, from the air, from whatever he carries — moving into open grain, plus light darkening the surface unevenly because his hands do not touch every part equally.

\n\n

That is why it only happens on full-grain, and mostly on veg-tanned. The grain has to be open for anything to get in. A coated surface has nothing to absorb, so it does not deepen. It just scuffs.

\n\n

It is also why a patina cannot be faked convincingly. The pattern comes from how one particular person holds one particular object. Pre-distressed leather is a guess at that, applied evenly, which is the one thing real wear never is.

\n\n

How to look after it

\n\n

Less than most people think.

\n\n

\nUse it. The oils in his hands are doing most of the work. Leather kept in a drawer dries out.
\nLet it dry on its own. If it gets soaked, blot it and leave it at room temperature. A radiator or a hairdryer will cook the fibres stiff, and that is not reversible.
\nCondition rarely. Once or twice a year, and only if it feels dry. Over-conditioning saturates the fibres and leaves the leather limp and dark, which people mistake for a deep patina and is actually the end of one.
\nExpect the first scratch early. On full-grain, most surface scratches buff out with a thumb. The ones that do not are the beginning of the thing you bought it for.

What to tell him

\n\n

If you want one line to hand over with it: this is full-grain, so it will darken where he holds it, and the marks on it were already there when it was a hide.

\n\n

That is more than almost anyone can say about a gift, and it is the difference between something he uses and something he keeps.
